Interview with Oleksandr Shatokhin

The book about bravery and friendship "Pirates of the Ice Sea" will be published soon, and in the meantime we want to share an interesting conversation with the talented illustrator Oleksandr Shatokhin. They talked about plans for the future and the process of working on the publication.

Have you always wanted to be an illustrator?

Always. From my childhood, I remember how I could sit and draw for hours. There was a case when, as a child, I found my older sister's new notebooks, which she had bought for school, and simply drew something inside all the notebooks. And that was right before September 1) Well, it is clear that the conversation with me was serious later) But at that moment, the parents came to terms with the fact that the child would be an artist and supported my desire to paint, for which I am very grateful.

What new skills would you like to learn or improve? Maybe finish some courses?

There are no such thoughts yet. I would like to try to mold something, do ceramics

How do you get started? Are there any rituals when you sit down to work? (perhaps listening to music or working in silence)

The best ritual is when you sit down and start drawing) I usually work in silence.

How did the work on the book "Pirates of the Ice Sea" go? Did everything go smoothly or were there any difficulties?

There was a task to make a cover, endpaper, one illustration and small drawings for decoration. So there were no particular difficulties or complications. This is not a full-fledged work with a book, where you also make a block of illustrations. After quickly reading the book, an image immediately appeared in my head - a skull made of ice blocks, so I didn't do any other searches, because it will be a really cool cover! )

What is your impression of the book "Pirates of the Frozen Sea"?

In general, I somehow have a talent for drawing illustrations or covers for Scandinavian works. I drew the cover to "Angel in the Devil's Mouth" by Levi Henriksen, then a full-fledged work on Maria Parr's book "Tonya Glimmerdal", Ingebjerg Sam gave "Extreme Angel", now I'm also starting to work on Frida Nilsson's book "Yagger Yagger".So love to Scandinavian books, as they say, it's in my blood already, probably). In all these books, children are individuals, free and with his worldview and experience, that's what I like, it's something so important for us adults, a certain the message we get through such books. Pirates of the Frozen Sea is no exception.

In which technique do you like to draw the most? And why exactly?

Now I draw on the iPad. Easy. I like it. But I also really like watercolor paints, an ordinary pencil. Nothing is equal to a line made with an ordinary pencil or a watercolor stain.

Do you have a dream project that you want to realize? (it is possible to illustrate the book)

I would like to focus more on silent book projects (books without words). This direction is very interesting to me at the moment. I want to do something big, large-scale. But everything has its own time.

What is the secret of your work, do you need inspiration? Is this a myth and something else is needed for productive work?

I do what I love, what I enjoy and what gives me satisfaction and the opportunity to develop and discover new ones goals This is my inspiration. Productive work will be when you enjoy what you do.

How do you relax and spend your free time?

I read books, travel, cook, spend time with my family, and draw something for myself, for my own pleasure, of course)

What are your plans for the next 5 years? And who do you see yourself as?

To publish books in foreign publishing houses. Make another silent book. see the world)

Style and imagery, sense of humor, "non-standard vision" are clearly visible in your works - where does it all come from? it takes how your own stories are born, because this cannot be learned.

It is difficult to answer this question. I just draw what I want)
