About Authors

Sir Philip Pullman, holder of the Order of the British Empire and a member of the Royal Literary Society, is an English novelist born in 1946 into a Royal Air Force pilot family. The family moved frequently, and as a child Philip Pullman had to travel extensively around the world. He spent part of his childhood, in particular, in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where he spent some time in school. In 1953, when Pullman was seven, his father died in a plane crash. Pullman's mother remarried and the family moved to Australia, and from the age of 11 he lived in North Wales with his grandfather, who was a priest. After graduating from school, Philip Pullman studied at Oxford, Exeter College, where he studied English philology. He later returned to Oxford, where he worked as a teacher at various schools for 12 years and then taught at Westminster College, teaching Victorian novels and folklore. In time, Pullman left his teaching job and devoted himself entirely to literature. He is the author of several best-selling books, including the fantasy trilogy Dark Matters, the tetralogy The Mysteries of Sally Lockhart. He became a knight in the New Year's award in 2019 for "services of literature". The first book in the Pullman trilogy, Dark Matter, The Northern Lights, won the 1995 Carnegie Medal from the Library Association, which identified the outstanding English-language children's book of the year. By the 70th anniversary of the medal, she was recognized as one of the ten best winning works.
